Small Space Solutions

Colorful entry
It's OK to be bold in a small space, especially in a transition zone, such as a foyer. Here, graphic blue-and-white wallpaper adds life to an entry. Crisp white trim balances the space.

Cozy sitting room
A 10x13-foot space lives large with layers of texture and a light palette. Green and turquoise accessories accent the cream foundation. Armless chairs allow room to move around the room.

Compact kitchen
Skinny appliances give this miniature kitchen full-size function. The FiveStar range, with burners spanning the top of the unit, looks hunkier than its 24 inches. Cabinetry panels conceal an 18-inch dishwasher and refrigerator. A framed pegboard provides practical and livable storage.

Small space palette
Choose a simple color scheme for a small space. Here, pickled floors and whitewashed walls and ceilings add texture and keep small rooms light and bright.

Sunny dining room
A round table with a pedestal leg functions best in a small dining room because it allows more legroom. An inexpensive Colonial chandelier from Ikea gets a modern touch with unexpected round bulbs.

Comfortable bedroom
Wallpaper functions as architecture in an otherwise simple room. The sunny yellow pattern from Farrow & Ball in the bedroom has a large repeat, creating visual structure to the eye.

Living room nook
Vaulted ceilings make this cozy sitting room feel spacious. White walls make the colorful furnishings pop.

Bright, white kitchen
Remove upper cabinets in a tiny kitchen to open up the space. A small island does double duty as a work surface and a casual eating area. White walls, floors, and counters keep the room light and airy.

Sleeping alcove
Squeeze a charming bedroom into a tight space. Built-ins make the nook super functional. Cabinets form a bed platform and additional cabinets at the headboard offer extra storage. Curtains pull shut for privacy.
