Just learned about Gwathmey and now surfing the web for his designs. Given his contribution to architecture with his new modernistic style, I have to call him a genius, but I'm not totally impressed. Along with the brilliance and awe; there is a disjointedness, incoherence, darkness, and claustrapohic nature (check the stone hallway in St Barts house), only at the margins and in small amounts, to his designs. To some extent, like many of us, I believe he was just winging it.
