Yellow Bedroom Makeover

Sunshine Glow
A much-needed makeover took this master bedroom in a newly constructed apartment complex from lackluster to bright and sunny. The room gets a kick from a comfortable and warm tone-on-tone color palette of golden yellow, ivory, and beige that also incorporates playful textures. Adding patterned wallpaper to just the wall behind the headboard creates a budget-friendly focal point for the room's most prominent wall.

Double-Duty Bookshelf
Getting creative with the bedside table helped this bedroom make the most of its limited square footage. This 30-inch-high bookshelf creates a bedside landing spot and offers lower-level storage for books and hobby materials. Thanks to its open shelves, the unit doesn't add bulkiness like a chest of drawers would.

Organized Storage
Use bins and boxes in an open nightstand to corral odd-shape items into an appealing assembly. Here, knitting supplies feel like a part of the decor thanks to the attractive dark wooden bin and the yarn colors that happen to coordinate with the rest of the room. The slanted shelf above the bin sports leftover wallpaper to help the unit blend into the room.

Neutral Lighting
A clear lamp with a natural burlap shade brings light into the room without adding bulkiness. The see-through base lets the wallpaper behind it take the spotlight. The lamp's coarse shade and jute trim add roughness that contrasts with the smooth and shiny glass base, contributing to the room's overall mix of interesting textures.

Warming Accent Pillows
On the bed, these chocolate brown and orange accent pillows offer deeper colors that offset the room's predominantly yellow palette. Their simple floral motif echoes the pattern on the bedspread and pillows but incorporates a larger-scale version that emphasizes the high-contrast colors.

Nightstand Disguise
Bedside tables don't need to match to make a room feel put together. A 32-inch dresser from the homeowner's previous home works perfectly as a bedside table here. It's the ideal height for access from the bed, and it adds storage to the room. The richly colored wood draws on the color of the accent pillows and complements the room's overall palette. Matching clear lamps placed on both bedside tables create harmony.

Easy Artwork Addition
Artwork gives this yellow master bedroom an opportunity to expand beyond a tonal color palette and also adds pattern and texture. Here, modest-size pieces form a grid to fill the space over the sideboard. Wide mats help the prints' colors pop and make it easy to turn graphic patterned paper into budget-friendly pieces of art. Plus, the white mats and frames coordinate with the white metal birdcage-like lamps.

Mix-and-Match Furniture
To keep a bedroom from looking stuffy, play around with mixing and matching furniture styles. White lamps atop the black-lacquered sideboard add modern flair to this classic-looking piece. The golden tones of the drawer and door hardware link this dark piece to the room's golden palette.

Cozy Reading Corner
Add a comfortable reading chair to a corner of the room to create a cozy reading nook. The solid, soft beige upholstered chair quietly claims this area of the bedroom for that purpose, while the gray ceramic stool nearby echoes the Asian styling of the sideboard. A two-tone blue art piece above the chair adds to the peaceful feeling. If you're more likely to curl up with a gadget than a paperback, make sure there's an electrical socket nearby for easy charging.

Decorative Draperies
Use smaller patterns on large pieces of fabric when you're trying to incorporate them into an already pattern-heavy space. The goldenrod drapery panels work in this bedroom because the small-scale geometric trellis pattern reads like a solid from across the room and doesn't fight with the space's other prints.

Area Rug Addition
Liven up wall-to-wall beige carpeting by layering on an area rug. This geometric rug placed under the bed adds contemporary personality to the room and introduces lively texture. The design picks up the room's key colors, linking them together in single pattern that unites the various warm and cool hues.
